about

This is my arrangement of Bill Weiner’s arrangement of Lead Belly’s arrangement of a spiritual. That’s why it’s folk music. Played by a rowdy, remarkable hootenanny of a band with Pete Seeger cohort Rik Palieri on banjo, onetime David Bromberg Band member Neil Rossi on fiddle, and Larry Nager bringing his Kaua’i-via Memphis-honed rhythm on thumping bass and washboard.

lyrics

They whooped him up the hill x2
They whooped him up the hill for me
One day when I was lost, they hung him on the cross
They whooped him up the hill for me

They speared him in the side x2
They speared him in the side for me
One day when I was lost, they hung him on the cross
They speared him in the side for me

He never said a mumblin’ word x2
Never said a mumblin’ word for me
One day when I was lost, they hung him on the cross
Never said a mumblin’ word for me

They hung him on the cross x2
Hung him on the cross for me
One day when I was lost, they hung him on the cross
Hung him on the cross for me

He hung his head and cried x2
Hung his head and cried for me
One day when I was lost, they hung him on the cross
Hung his head and cried for me

He hung his head and died x2
Hung his head and died for me
One day when I was lost, they hung him on the cross
Hung his head and died for me

He’s coming back again x2
Coming back again for me
One day when I was lost, they hung him on the cross
He’s coming back again for me

about

William Lee Ellis Memphis

"There's no one else playing exactly the same sort of music as William Lee Ellis," said legendary producer Jim Dickinson of the Americana/blues master acoustic guitarist. "It's as if he's invented his own sort of 'holy blues' genre."
